Largest BSB Sports Tour Ever: Rugby and Netball Students Compete in Cheltenham and Gloucester

On Friday 22nd March, 44 students from The British School of Barcelona took part in the largest Sports Tour the school has undertaken so far. 3 Rugby fixtures and 2 Netball fixtures were represented by u11 and u12s rugby teams, and the Netball was played between u14 and u16 teams.

Day 1

As soon as the group landed, we were taken immediately to our first fixtures vs Pitville School, Cheltenham. Our welcome was fantastic, and all teams played extremely well, with the u14 Netball narrowly missing out on a win 10-4 and the U16 Netball winning convincingly 35-1, and the Rugby teams playing at u12 level lost 4 tries to 3.

Onto our accommodation at the famous Cheltenham Racecourse Ground had some amazing views as seen in the tour photos, and then into the town to have some team bonding time and food!

Day 2

After breakfast, the group headed to Drybrook RFC in the Forest of Dean, the highest ranked village rugby team in the UK and played 2 fixtures. With the support of the Netball girls and staff, the players were exceptional and won both games; U11s winning 55-25 and the U12s Winning from the last kick of the game 21-19. Following the game, we had presentations in clubhouse and much needed food and refreshments. From the game we headed back to Gloucester for the Premiership Rugby contest of Gloucester vs Wasps which is one of the oldest contests of rugby in the world. The group were excited to see the game after the exploits of the BSB Rugby players and were not let down with Gloucester coming from 0-11 down to win in convincing manner 27-14. After the game, the students had the opportunity to meet the players from both teams with Man of the Match Billy Twelvetrees spending lots of time talking, signing shirts and having pictures taken with our students. Finally, the day concluded with some late-night laughs, singing and pizza!

Day 3

Again, breakfast and then out to the second Netball fixtures and final rugby fixtures. The final opposition was always going to be the biggest test for our students playing against established opposition of Hucclecote NC and Old Pats RFC at Cheltenham College. The teams acquitted themselves amazingly well, with the u11s Rugby drawing 30-30, the U12s Rugby losing by 2 tries and the Netball teams tasting their first defeats in the u14 and u16s. Finally, the day was not over and after refreshments and great hospitality, the group set out for the last event of team food and 10-pin-bowling!

Day 4

And we set off back to Barcelona with a tired, but very happy group of BSB Sports Stars, that have come such a long way this year.

A very special thanks to Ms Lashbrook, Ms Clayden, Mr Rimmer and Mr Cross for their help with making the tour such a success.

Now the difficult task of preparing even more Sports Tours for the students of The British School of Barcelona, in more sports for 2019-20. Watch this space!
