Founder of BSB Receives the Award of OBE Presented by the Duke of Cambridge

We feel honoured to announce that Anne McEwan (Mrs Farré), founder of The British School of Barcelona (BSB), has recently been awarded an OBE for services to education. The investiture was presented by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, in a ceremony that took place at Buckingham Palace in November.

By being appointed Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), Anne McEwan is thus recognised for her exceptional contribution to the development of British schools in Spain over more than fifty years.

While honouring Anne McEwan’s legacy to British education, this award also rewards an entire career (and life) devoted to driving BSB forward. Beginning her career as a teacher in Scotland before moving to Barcelona in the 1960s, Anne McEwan soon progressed to Headteacher of the former Anglo-American School, origin of current BSB and one of the earliest British schools in Spain. Thanks to her determination and drive to further advance the school in a time when British schools were an exception, she worked tirelessly for the recognition of British schools in Spain and the validation of studies for Spanish pupils. This accomplishment was a determining factor in the development of BSB, which saw an increasing interest in British education from both international and local families. This growth in demand made the need for expansion to a larger location apparent, planting the seed for the current campus of BSB Castelldefels.

An innate educationalist, Anne McEwan has, to this date, been involved with the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS), the umbrella body which represents the sector, first as President for 14 years (becoming the first woman to occupy this post) and later as a member of the Executive Committee. Her exceptional voluntary contribution to the development of this institution has helped create opportunities for children and young people of all nationalities to prepare for the future.

We would like to invite the whole BSB community to join us in commemorating this award , because we feel we are indebted to Anne McEwan’s legacy. Under her leadership BSB became one of the most prestigious international schools in Spain, with excellent academic results. Anne McEwan’s vision, determination and tireless commitment to the development of British education have all been critical to the growth in provision of high quality, British education at BSB. This is an honour that Anne McEwan would like to share with the whole BSB community as she highlights the importance of teamwork over the years in this common achievement.
