Keynote speaker John Carlin, renowned journalist, author, broadcaster, speechmaker and scriptwriter has been one of the first guest speakers to offer an online talk to our current and future BSB Nexus Pre-University students.
On Monday, 15th June, John Carlin gave a really insightful virtual talk about career choices, the basic attributes of hard work, discipline and focus, and the importance of building up credibility and being reliable as some key factors for professional success.
His was one of a series of live talks and career counselling activities that our 16-18 year-old students will be able to benefit from during the last week of term as they move on to the nexrt stage of their educational journey.
End-of-Year Transition Week
Every year we invite our future Year 12 students to spend their final week of the Year 11 at BSB Nexus. During the week they attend presentations and workshops on their chosen subjects, university destinations, careers, soft-skill development and what to expect in Years 12 and 13. They also engage in activities that help them get to know their classmates as well as the teaching staff and the BSB Nexus environment in general. During this week, our students get to know one another and learn about what to expect in BSB Nexus and beyond, just like every year group before them.
Adapting to the Covid-19 Situation
This year we have adapted to the situation created by the Covid-19 pandemic and introduced the pre-Nexus programme that already allowed Year 11 students to engage with some of their subjects as well as spend time with their classmates and teachers.
Similarly, we have also adapted our plans for the transition week by moving all presentations and workshops online. Whilst everything is already online, as we reached phase two before the 15th of June, we further adapted the transition programme and gave students the option to attend school for the week so they could familiarise themselves with the BSB Nexus campus and see their friends before heading off to what will surely be a unique summer.
Of course, due to social distancing requirements, we have developed a Covid-19-compliant protocol to manage social interactions and stagger student attendance by using a blended online/presential approach, so that students can engage with the activities from home, as well as whilst they are in school.
A Fantastic 4–Day Transition Programme
Mr Richardson, Director of Pre-University, Mrs Burns, our BSB University and Career Counsellor, and the team have put together a fantastic 4-day transition programme, with an amazing range of keynote speakers, university presentations and masterclasses, and workshops throughout the week.
The programme is running from Monday, 15th June, to Thursday, 18th June, with 9h to 13h at school (and online), and then 15h to 16h entirely online. Attendance to school is voluntary, with all presentations being streamed on Teams or Zoom for those students who have chosen not to come in or who are unable to come in.
Guest Speakers, Specialised Workshops and BSB Alumni
In addition to an impressive range of guest speakers from a variety of professional areas, such as John Carlin, Jan van der Putten, Rabih Zbib, Bill Gadja, Anna Munro, Amal Ramej, Will Shank, Artur Amich, Patrick Flood, and actor Colin Cunliffe, the week also includes university presentations with La Salle, EducationUSA and Bristol University, as well as specialised workshops:
- Exam Access Arrangements
- Introduction to EPQ (A Levels)
- Introduction to Extended Essay (IBDP)
- Introduction to CAS programme
BSB Alumni currently studying at University College London, such as Sasha (Architecture) and Neila (European Social and Political Studies), as well as graduate students who are taking courses at La Salle Barcelona, are also sharing first-hand experience of their daily life at university, what to expect and main highlights, since there are no greater guides than those who have gone before!
The week will also include a Q&A panel with BSB Alumni attending UK, Dutch and Spanish universities, and a live talk with guest BSB Alumni Lucas, who will explain what life is like at a US University and how he secured a Sports Scholarship. (read more about this)
All in all, an impressive programme of moving on activities to help students get an insight of the exciting years ahead and encourage them to make the most of their time at BSB Nexus.
A huge thank you to the whole team organising this and to all the guest speakers joining us and supporting our students at this crucial stage in their lives!
