PE and Sport

“The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person´s determination” (Tommy Lasorda)

At The British School of Barcelona we understand that there is more to school life than just academic study. We run an exciting and varied sports programme for all of our students to participate in, giving them opportunities to either play, coach or referee, within our Physical Education lessons or as part of our extra-curricular programme.

Our Physical Education department is passionate about the advantages sporting activities can give to an individual. Not only do they provide the teacher with a chance to create a sound relationship with students away from the classroom, they also create opportunities for the students to meet others and make new friends. This helps our students to develop their social and communication skills in a fun and healthy environment.

By offering a wide and varied programme through our lunch time activities, after-school clubs and societies we are encouraging students to unearth a hidden passion that they can develop in later life.

Through physical education we hope to develop a well-rounded, healthy and socially skilled individual by improving academic grades, through use of time management, increased self –esteem and motivation. Team work and leadership skills are also important life skills that are acquired. Our students participate and help organize our Secondary annual Sports Day. There is also an opportunity to become a Sports Leader as part of the Year 10 PE Curriculum.

The British School of Barcelona participates in the official School Sports Programme. The aim is to give equal opportunity to all participants and encourage fair play.

Throughout the school year there are competitions between local Castelldefels schools. In the sports calendar we have school teams playing weekly matches, swimming competitions and cross-country competitions. There is also an opportunity to compete in table-tennis and chess tournaments.

Our school also participates in BISA (Barcelona International Schools Association) sport competitions and other international competitions involving other Cognita schools.

At The British School of Barcelona we have agreements with the sports clubs next to both campuses, Castelldefels and Sitges, to use more specialised facilities for sport activities, whether within the formal curriculum (Physical Education lessons, swimming…) or as after-school activities, as well as during the Summer School.

Some of these facilities are the Granvia Mar Sports Club, the Olympic Canal, the Andrés Gimeno Tennis Club (in the Castelldefels campus) and the Club Natació Sitges (in the Sitges campus).
