We want our students to be successful in life after BSB

The British School of Barcelona has a well-established and proud reputation for providing great education. Our students leave with excellent academic results, ready to live successful lives.

We achieve this through a combination of academic excellence, giving students more say in their curriculum, our focus on the skills and habits they will need to thrive after BSB, and the best possible personal, social and academic support for every one of our students.

How does IBDP programme work?

The IBDP is an international and enquiry-based programme that takes students onto a journey of becoming academically independent learners. IBDP’s mission is “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment” (IBO, 2019).

The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core. Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge (Theory of Knowledge - TOK), complete independent research (Extended Essay - EE) and undertake a project that often involves community service (Creativity, Activity, Service - CAS).

There are different courses within each subject group which students must choose from, however, in general, all IBDP students will study two languages, one science, one maths and one humanistic subject.

Alternatively, a candidates may substitute a course from the Arts subject group for a course in either the Language and literature, Language acquisition, or Individuals and societies subject groups.

Out of six subjects they choose for their IB Diploma, three of those subjects must be studied at the Higher Level (HL) and three at the Standard Level (SL).

How we bring this to life

We bring our mission and aims to life by ensuring academic excellence; providing students with choice and a genuine say in their learning; explicitly teaching and developing wider learning skills and habits; and finally through our programme of care and support, which we feel is second to none.

Academic Excellence

We ensure our students leave BSB with great qualifications in order to access places at the best universities across the World. We have achieved this for many years and this is ingrained into the way we operate.

Student Choice

From the first days in Early Years to the end of their BSB careers, our students are given choices within lessons and/or for the subjects they wish to study in order to ensure they have a genuine stake in their learning. With this approach students are more engaged, motivated and have more fun with their learning.

Learning Habits

For the past 4 years, we have been focusing on Learning Habits or dispositions – i.e. the skills and habits our students will need to be successful in life after BSB. We don’t want our students just to get to university, we want them to be successful in all they do after BSB, so having these wider skills is essential. These skills are explicitly taught within and beyond our curriculum and help to develop character and a global perspective.

Care & Support

We aim to provide superb personal, social and academic support for every one of our students. This led to us achieving the International benchmark award of the Wellbeing Award for Schools. Our programme of personal, social and health education is delivered using the ‘philosophy for children’ approach. This provides a safe environment for students to explore and discuss issues and principles.
