It is a perfect balance of soft and academic skills that will help your child discover the joy of learning and build their knowledge base.

“Nothing without joy.”

– Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach

Learning through playful curiosity

We follow an educational approach to learning that aims to ignite a child’s natural curiosity to explore the world around them.

At The British School of Barcelona we use this inquiry approach to learning to empower learners to think critically, to question, to preserve when facing challenges, to be confident, kind and respectful whilst consciously promoting children’s communication and language skills, and physical, personal, social and emotional development.

Play and exploration, active learning, flexible spaces, collaboration with families, intentional teaching and provocations according to children's interests and developmental stages are key aspects of our approach.

We aim to promote active learning where children are viewed as being confident and capable citizens of the world.

My son's journey in Early Years is absolutely amazing! He comes home with new knowledge every day! He is a happy and proud learner.

Early Minds, Early Character, Early Bodies

BSB Early Years promotes pedagogical excellence through the use of the EYFS Framework. Our inquiry, play-based curriculum promotes children’s natural curiosity and encourages them to explore concepts (big ideas), weaving in skills and knowledge from many disciplines, including early numeracy and literacy skills, science, technology, engineering, or art.

We believe that young children learn most effectively when involved in engaging, relevant, challenging and significant learning experiences which take the individuality and uniqueness of each learner into account.

Stimulating spaces that encourage collective play, games and socialising

Providing the right setting is a key part of a successful foundation, which is why we have created bespoke environments for our youngest students that are innovative and creative, yet warm and inviting.

“The staff are incredibly caring, dedicated and professional. It is a warm environment and I feel my child is really considered as an individual.“

– Reception parent, Voice of Parent survey 2024

An early start

Our youngest learners from the age of 2 benefit from opportunities to explore and learn in developmentally-appropriate ways through the use of the emergent curriculum.

The curriculum originates from sensitive observations of children at play and in interactions with the environment or each other.

Our nursery school teachers design curricular extensions and further invitations to explore and discover with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) in mind.

The collaboration between home and school environments assures continuity of learning and the joy of participation in your child’s learning.

Your family, your schedule

At BSB we offer our Pre-Nursery and Nursery families the flexibility to select from a variety of day options.

Depending on you and your child’s needs you can choose a 3, 4, 5 full day programme, or if you prefer, 5 half days.

Meet our Early Years team

We have a team of passionate, specialised early years educators who uphold the values of love, care and respect. In each class there are two adults, a lead teacher who is responsible for the academic programme and a learning assistant who supports the delivery of the programme.

Each child’s development and learning is individual, and happens at different rates. Your child’s educators are sensitive observers who understand what each child needs in order to be a successful learner. Preschool teachers provide daily learning engagements that are well matched to children’s developing abilities and interests, drawing upon observations and assessments to plan for progression.
