BSB City Recognised by the University of Cambridge as an NRICH Problem-Solving School
At The British School of Barcelona, we are proud to announce that BSB City has officially been recognised as a Problem-Solving School through the NRICH Problem-Solving Schools initiative, a prestigious programme affiliated with the Mathematics Department at the University of Cambridge.
This recognition highlights BSB City’s commitment to delivering an innovative, future-focused education where critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving are embedded into everyday learning.
About the NRICH Initiative
NRICH is part of the Millennium Mathematics Project (MMP), the University of Cambridge’s flagship mathematics education and outreach programme for students aged three to nineteen.
The initiative provides rich mathematical experiences that help students develop confidence, reasoning skills and a deeper understanding of mathematics. Schools that receive recognition demonstrate a strong commitment to helping students approach challenges with confidence, apply their knowledge in new situations and explore different strategies independently.
Teachers involved in the programme also take part in professional development opportunities and collaborate with an international network of schools dedicated to strengthening mathematics education.
What This Means for Students
At BSB City, mathematical enquiry is an essential part of learning for every student. Lessons encourage students to investigate, collaborate, ask questions and explain their reasoning. This helps build confidence alongside strong academic foundations.
Students explore different approaches, take intellectual risks and learn from challenge. Developing these habits from an early age helps them become resilient, adaptable and independent learners.
The impact of this approach can already be seen across the school. During Open Classrooms, Year 4 students have shared mathematical activities with parents, demonstrating how discussion, collaboration and enquiry support learning. Rather than focusing solely on the correct answer, students are encouraged to test ideas, justify their conclusions and reflect on different methods.
Preparing Students for the Future
This recognition reflects BSB’s commitment to Hard Thinking, a key focus linked to our 2025-28 School’s Development Programme. Through enquiry, discussion and problem-solving, students develop critical thinking, embrace challenge and develop confidence in their learning.
As technology and artificial intelligence continue to transform the world around us, these skills are becoming increasingly valuable. Through initiatives such as NRICH, BSB is helping students build the knowledge, confidence and adaptability needed to succeed both academically and in their future careers.
