Celebrating the Opening Ceremony of BSB Maresme
On 15th October 2026, we officially opened the doors to BSB Maresme in Cabrera de Mar, marking an exciting new chapter for The British School of Barcelona.
The inauguration brought together more than a hundred guests, including local and regional authorities, representatives of the British Consulate General in Barcelona, Cognita executives, BSB staff and members of the wider educational community.
Together, we celebrated not only the opening of a new campus, but also the beginning of a new journey for BSB in the Maresme area.
A place to learn, discover and thrive
Guests had the opportunity to explore the new campus and discover the spaces where BSB Maresme pupils will learn, create, collaborate and develop their interests. From modern classrooms and science laboratories to soundproofed music practice rooms, an art room and sports facilities, including an indoor sports hall and an outdoor football pitch, every space has been designed to support different ways of learning and growing.
These facilities reflect the pillars at the heart of our BSB educational model: academic excellence, wellbeing, innovation and personal development. Beyond the classroom, pupils are encouraged to develop their curiosity, think critically, communicate confidently and become increasingly independent, preparing them to navigate an ever-changing world.
Neil Tetley, our Executive Principal, highlighted the importance of the people who will bring the new campus to life: ‘Facilities matter, and we feel very fortunate to have such an exceptional campus. However, the true value of any great school lies in the people within it. The BSB team is what truly sets us apart, and I am convinced they will make BSB Maresme a very special place for our pupils.’
The campus has welcomed more than 120 Early Years and Primary pupils in its first academic year. From September 2027, Secondary education will be introduced, with the school progressively expanding towards a complete educational journey for students aged three to eighteen.
The celebration also featured Andrea Flores, a BSB alumni from the Class of 2020 and currently an IP Master’s Intern at Cuatrecasas, who shared her perspective on the lasting impact of a BSB education and the opportunities it can open up long after graduation.
Building a more sustainable future
Sustainability has been an important consideration throughout the design and development of BSB Maresme. The campus incorporates sustainable materials, eighty solar panels and energy-efficient solutions that help reduce its environmental impact.
This commitment also extends into the learning experience. By helping pupils understand environmental challenges and their own role in addressing them, BSB aims to nurture the awareness, responsibility and curiosity needed to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Becoming part of the Maresme community
From the outset, BSB Maresme has been developed with a clear ambition: to become an active part of the Cabrera de Mar community and build lasting relationships with the people, organisations and institutions that make the region so special.
The inauguration welcomed representatives from the Cabrera de Mar Town Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Diputació de Barcelona and the British Consulate General in Barcelona, reflecting the importance of collaboration between the school and its local community.
Òscar Fernández, Mayor of Cabrera de Mar, warmly welcomed the new campus and highlighted the opportunities it brings for the municipality: ‘Today, Cabrera de Mar is forging new links with the United Kingdom through this British school, which allows us to share experiences and strengthen collaboration between the municipality and the educational community. It is an honour for us to host institutions that foster the social, educational and economic development of our area. Now more than ever, it is important to build projects like this, which help create a future of collective hope.’
Lloyd Milen, British Consul General in Barcelona, also joined the celebration, recognising the role of international education in connecting people, cultures and communities.
As BSB begins this new chapter in Cabrera de Mar, we look forward to continuing to develop meaningful partnerships across the Maresme and becoming part of the region’s educational and social fabric.
A new chapter for BSB
The opening also marks another milestone in BSB’s longstanding relationship with Cognita, which began in 2007 when BSB became the first international school to join the group.
David Baldwin, Chief Executive Officer of Cognita, reflected on this shared journey and the people who make a school special: ‘With BSB Maresme, we are creating more opportunities for those people to continue their work in the best possible way, and for more pupils to benefit from an excellent education.’
