On 25th September, The British School of Barcelona joined more than ninety Cognita schools around the world to celebrate the eighth Global Be Well Day, this year centred on Physical Activity and the message: ‘In Motion, We Thrive.’

Global Be Well Day is a Cognita initiative that celebrates the importance of wellbeing across our community, as individuals, as schools, and as one global family. Student wellbeing is our priority every day of the year and is woven into everything we teach. Each September, we pause for one dedicated day to bring this shared commitment into focus.

At BSB, this year’s celebration grew into a whole week of movement, connection and wellbeing, with students across our campuses taking part in active assemblies, movement challenges, energetic break times, sports activities, active lessons and creative performances.

At BSB Castelldefels, Secondary students started the day with an impressive challenge, completing 1,500 laps of the Rugby Pitch, covering approximately 600 kilometres collectively. That is equivalent to travelling from BSB Castelldefels to BSB City and back twelve times, or virtually reaching Colegio Meres in Asturias, another School in the Cognita family. They ended the day with the annual GBWD House Song, bringing students together through music, creativity and House spirit.

At BSB Sitges and BSB Maresme, students rounded off the week with whole-school yoga sessions, while BSB City hosted a Motion Around the World Showcase. Across the week, students also enjoyed flashmob dances, a whole-school aerobics warm-up and a range of other movement activities.

At BSB City, some of our older students also created a video exploring ‘deskercise’, interviewing students and staff about simple ways to incorporate movement into the school day.

WAS: Wellbeing All Year Round

At BSB, wellbeing is part of everyday school life. This commitment was recently recognised through the renewal of BSB’s Wellbeing Award for Schools (WAS) for a further three years. Following an external evaluation, the school’s evidence was described as ‘exemplary’, with assessors highlighting the way wellbeing is embedded across BSB’s culture and everyday school life. The accreditation, first awarded to BSB in 2022, has now been renewed until 2029.

The Importance of Sport at BSB

Sport is an important part of this wider approach to wellbeing. Our Sport and PE programme helps students develop a healthy lifestyle while building commitment, resilience, discipline, teamwork, leadership, respect, perseverance and dedication.

With a broad range of curricular and extracurricular opportunities across all key stages, students have plenty of opportunities to stay active, develop their skills and enjoy sport as part of school life.
